The scholarship program is designed to encourage and support students with strong scholastic backgrounds and leadership qualities who are going to attend or are currently attending a Canadian University, accredited college, technical school or institute of technology. The maximum number of years a student can benefit from this program is four.
A successful student will receive a scholarship award of up to $1,000 for the academic year.
Program Scope:
For the 2007-2008 academic year, $26,000 is available for scholarships: $25,000 from the Smitty Muyres Memorial Fund and $1,000 from the Marion Slaven Memorial Scholarship Fund. Awards from the Marion Slaven Scholarship Fund are given to students pursuing careers in nursing or the medical profession.
The Scholarship Committee reserves the right to alter the number of scholarships.
Eligibility:
The applicant must:
1. Be a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant
2. Be a resident of Yellowknife, Ndilo, Dettah, Rae-Edzo or the Ingraham Trail.
Adults over 25 years of age must be members in good standing of either the Yellowknife Elks Lodge #314, or Yellowknife Royal Purple #143.
Criteria:
The applicant must:
1. Submit an essay of not less than 300 words
2. Have proof of acceptance at a Canadian University, accredited college, technical school or institute of technology
3. Submit most recent transcripts
4. Submit three current letters of reference.
Preference will be given to students who:
1. Have a strong academic background
2. Have carefully considered their career goals
3. Are planning to major in a program that may help in the development of the NWT
4. Attend post-secondary education immediately after high school
5. Have attended school in the NWT
Priority consideration will be given to those students who:
1. Are children (natural or adopted) of an active member in good standing of the Yellowknife Elks Lodge #314 or the Royal Purple #143 of Yellowknife; or
2. Are an active member in good standing.

Payment of Scholarship:
The scholarships will be awarded in two installments. The first installment of $500.00 will be distributed in the fall semester. The first semester marks and proof of acceptance to second semester must be submitted in order to receive the second installment of $500.00. Please submit these as soon as possible. If marks and acceptance are not received by February 28, 2008, the recipient will forfeit his/her second installment.
